Steam Plant Energy Efficiency Upgrade
The Climate Trust has contracted to buy offsets from an industrial energy efficiency project being implemented by Johnson Controls Inc. at the City of Duluth's steam plant, which is operated by the Duluth Steam Cooperative Association. As outlined in an Energy Savings Performance Contract signed between Johnson Controls and the City of Duluth, Johnson Controls will install three industrial efficiency measures at the steam plant. All offset funds will be provided to Johnson Controls Inc. upon delivery of a Certificate of Substantial Completion and prior receipt of other contractual documents. How the project reduces emissions The project will result in the same or greater amount of useful energy from the steam plant, with a reduction of fossil fuel consumption and commensurate energy savings. Reduced carbon dioxide emissions realized by less fossil fuel consumption, which are being measured annually, constitute the carbon dioxide emission reductions. Why carbon finance was needed The funding provided by The Climate Trust to Johnson Controls Inc. covers the shortfall in capital between the total costs of the energy efficiency upgrades and the amount the City of Duluth could afford to spend on the upgrades. The upgrades would not have been installed without the offset funding provided by The Climate Trust, which makes the project above the business-as-usual scenario. |
