Financing Rural Wind DevelopmentVital Statistics Offsets: 135,165 metric tons carbon dioxide
Equivalent to taking 26,925 cars off the road for a year Project Type: Renewable Energy Project Lifetime: 15 years Contract Signing Date: 2007 Location: Two farms in rural Iowa Project Partners: NativeEnergy LLC.
Project Description
The
Climate Trust has contracted to buy offsets from the generation of renewable electricity resulting from the installation of two 2.1 megawatt wind turbines. Each turbine will be installed on a family farmer-owned farm in rural Iowa. Carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by displacing grid-based electricity through the generation of small scale wind power.
Offset funding will be provided to NativeEnergy upon commercial operation of each wind turbine. NativeEnergy guarantees that the project will provide at least 135,165 offsets over 15-years, beginning after installation .
How
the project reduces CO2
The
two installed wind turbines will generate electricity that will be transmitted into the regional grid system through power purchase agreements. The wind-generated electricity will displace grid-based electricity (produced by burning fossil fuels) and thereby will reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Non-GHG Benefits
These projects provide economic assistance to family farmer-owned businesses to help them compete and continue operations.
Additionality Criteria: Why We’re Involved
Small scale wind development is still cost prohibitive to many farmers. This unique partnership that NativeEnergy has developed with The Climate Trust, wind developers and farm owners, helps lower the costs of wind development. By purchasing the offsets at the time of commercial operation, Climate Trust is helping break through the capital barriers that otherwise prohibit installation of small scale wind energy.
